The National Football League has 32 teams, each with its unique story and history. Here, we are going to take a quick look at all 32 of them, so you’ll want to sit down for this one!
AFC East:
⦁ Buffalo Bills
We start off our list with the only team to have played in four consecutive Super Bowls (1990-93). The Buffalo Bills’ name was inspired by the American Indian tribe which lived in the area. The franchise was added to the NFL in 1959 and won the AFC Championship in 1964 and 1965. The team has had no luck at the Super Bowl, appearing in four but losing them all. The team’s main rival is the New England Patriots, which is nicknamed “The Patriot Way.” The team’s currently owned by Kim and Terry Pegula, who purchased the team in 2014.
⦁ Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins are the only NFL team to record a perfect season (1972), that’s including both the playoffs and regular season, which is quite a feat. The franchise was founded in 1972 and has won two Super Bowl titles. The franchise is currently owned by Stephen M. Ross.
⦁ New York Jets
The Jets are one of the only two teams in NFL history to win at their first Super Bowl season. Founded in 1959 as the ‘Titans,’ the team franchise was renamed “New York Jets” in 1963. The team is currently owned by Woody Johnson and Christopher Johnson.
⦁ New England Patriots
The Patriots are currently tied with six Super Bowl victories alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team holds the record for the most Super Bowl appearances, having participated in a total of 11 Super Bowl competitions. The Patriots started out as the ‘Boston Patriots in 1959 and have played for a total of 63 NFL seasons. Robert Kraft is the current owner of the New England Patriots.
NFC East:
⦁ Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys hold the record for most consecutive wins from 1966 to 1985. Founded in 1960, the team quickly dominated the sport and became known as “America’s Team.” The Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles, and in 2018 became the most valuable sports team in the world, being valued at $5 billion. Jerry Jones is the current owner of the popular franchise.
⦁ New York Giants
Officially known as “The New York Football Giants” to separate the franchise from the baseball team, the New York Giants. The franchise was founded in 1925 and still remains a family-owned affair. The team has won a total of four Super Bowl titles and is currently owned by John Mara, the grandson of the original founder, Tim Mara.
⦁ Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles franchise was established in 1933. During the 1943 season, the team joined hands with Pittsburgh, and was called the “Steagles” to compete after a shortage of players due to World War II. The Eagles won a Super Bowl title in 2018 against the New England Patriots and have four NFL championships. The team is currently owned by Jeffrey Lurie.
⦁ Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders have had many firsts. The team had its first fully televised season in 1950, the first marching band in NFL history, and the first radio channel, which went on air in 1944. The franchise was founded in 1932 and was previously known as the ‘Boston Braves.’ The team was renamed yet again in 2020, changing its name and logo from ‘Redskins’ to the Washington Commanders. The franchise has won a total of three Super Bowl titles and is currently owned by Daniel Snyder.
AFC North:
⦁ Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore finally received its NFL franchise status in 1996 after a full 12 seasons without a team. The franchise’s name is inspired by the American author and poet Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven.” The team has won two Super Bowl titles and is currently owned by Steve Bisciotti.
⦁ Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals have played the coldest game in the history of the NFL (1981, against the San Diego Chargers) where the wind chills were -37 degrees. The Bengals franchise began in 1968 and has made it to the finals at the Super Bowl twice. Mick Brown is the current owner of the Cincinnati Bengals.
⦁ Cleveland Browns
While the Cleveland Browns franchise was founded in 1944 and joined the NFL in 1950, it has been able to establish itself as a perennial contender in the NFL. The Browns played in the first-ever Monday Night Football game in 1970, defeating the New York Jets. The team is currently owned by Dee and Jimmy Haslam.
⦁ Pittsburg Steelers
This is the first team in NFL history to have won a total of six Super Bowl Titles. Founded in Pittsburgh in 1933, the franchise was originally called the Pittsburgh Pirates before dropping the name in 1940 in favor of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team is currently one of the most successful teams in the NFL and is currently owned by the Rooney Family.

⦁ Chicago Bears
The Bears is the second charter member of the NFL to still exist. The franchise played its first game for the American Professional Football Association as the Decatur Staleys, which later became the NFL. The Chicago Bears also have some of the most exciting rivalries in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, who they have been playing against since 1920. The team has one Super Bowl title and is currently owned by Virginia Halas McCaskey.
⦁ Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions first started as the Portsmouth Spartans in 1930 in Ohio before being purchased by Detroit radio exec George A. Richards who moved the team to Detroit. The Lions began the Thanksgiving Day football game tradition in 1934, playing at the holiday ever since. The team is currently owned by Sheila Ford Hamp.
⦁ Green Bay Packers
This is the only community-owned non-profit sports team in the US. The Packers’ journey began in 1919 after the Indian Packing Company sponsored a football team. The team later joined the NFL in 1921, making it the third oldest franchise in the NFL. The Packers have won a total of 4 Super Bowl titles, and the team is currently owned by the Green Bay Packers, Inc.,
⦁ Minnesota Vikings
The team made its NLF debut back in 1961. They are also the last team to have won the NFL Championship in 1969, just before the NFL-AFL merger. The team is currently owned by the Wilf Family.
AFC South:
⦁ Houston Texans
They are the youngest franchise, having joined the NFL in 2002. This is the city’s second NFL team after the Houston Oilers. The young franchise has done well, winning its first division championship in 2011, and has won five more AFC South championships. The team is currently owned by Janice McNair.
⦁ Indianapolis Colts
The Colts is among the short list of NFL teams to have won a Super Bowl title while playing for two different cities (the other one being the Las Vegas Raiders). Also, the Colts are the only team in NFL history to have won two Super Bowls in the same host city (Miami). The franchise was established in 1953 in Baltimore before being moved to Baltimore, Indianapolis, in 1984. The team has won two Super Bowl titles and is currently owned by Jim Irsay.
⦁ Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars joined the NFL in 1999 but played their first game which was the Hall of Fame Game at Canton in 1995. The team is owned by Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan.
⦁ Tennessee Titans
The team first started playing in 1960 as the Houston Oilers. It was the first franchise to have played the majority of its games in the famous Houston Astrodome. These days, you can find the team on their home field at the Nissan Stadium, Nashville. The team is currently owned by Amy Adams Strunk.
NFC South:
⦁ Atlanta Falcons
Did you know that the mascot for this team was a live falcon for the first 15 seasons? Well, now you do. The team was awarded franchise status in 1965. The team is currently owned by a successful businessman, Arthur Blank, and the tally of Super Bowl wins for the team is just that – blank (sorry, Art!)
⦁ Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers made history back in 1995 after becoming the first expansion franchise to have defeated a reigning Super Bowl champion (the San Francisco 49ers) in an inaugural season. David Tepper is the team’s current owner.
⦁ New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints were awarded the NFL franchise on All Saints Day, 1966, and the team was named after the fact. The team has a single Super Bowl title and is currently owned by Gayle Benson.
⦁ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
It’s a sad time to be a Buccaneers fan, mainly after the game’s star quarterback Tom Brady announced his retirement. Tom Brady is set to join FOX sports’ NFL broadcast in the fall of 2024, so it’s really going down this time (Brady had rolled back on his decision to retire in the past). The Buccaneers franchise was first established in 1976. The team has won two Super Bowl titles. The team is currently owned by the Glazer family.
AFC West:
⦁ Denver Broncos
Denver is home to three of the five longest field goals in the history of the NFL. The Broncos play home games at the Empower Field at Mile High. The Broncos started playing in 1960 when the American Football League merged with the National Football League. The team has won a total of 3 Super Bowl titles. Ron Walton is the team’s current owner.
⦁ Kansas City Chiefs
While the team played its first game in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, the franchise was rebranded in 1963 by the then-owner Lamar Hunt. The team was named Chiefs and moved to Kansas City. The Chiefs have won two Super Bowl titles and are owned by the Hunt family.
⦁ Las Vegas Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders is the only NFL team to have played the Super Bowl in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, which earned them the title, “Team of the Decades.” The Raiders have won three Super Bowl titles. The team is currently owned by Carol and Mark Davis.
⦁ Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers were founded by Barron Hilton in 1959. While originally from Los Angeles, the team had to move to San Diego in 1961 due to completion from the Los Angeles Rams. The team is currently owned by Dean Spanos.
NFC West:
⦁ Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals is the oldest NFL franchise dating back to 1898. The franchise was established in Chicago and joined the NFL as a charter team in 1920. The team is currently owned by Michael Bidwell.
⦁ Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are the only team in the NFL to win three championships in three cities; St. Louis (1999), Los Angeles (1951, 2021), and Cleveland (1945). The team plays its home games at the Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The Rams were founded in 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio but relocated to Los Angeles in 1946. The team has won two Super Bowl titles and is currently owned by Stan Kroenke.
⦁ San Francisco 49ers
This is the first team in NFL history to have won 15 regular season games. The 49ers first started playing in 1946. They won their first Super Bowl title in 1982 and three more Super Bowls. The team is currently owned by Denise DeBartolo York.
⦁ Seattle Seahawks
Popular for the 2010 NFC wild-card game “Beast Quake,” where the fans intense roars were picked up by the local seismograph, The Seattle Seahawks played their first game during the 1976 season. The Seahawks won their first Super Bowl in 2014. The team is currently owned by Jody Allen.
